A leading figure in the opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has declared his readiness to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if a younger, dynamic, and broadly acceptable candidate emerges on the party’s platform.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, the former Vice President explained that his interest in the election is not driven by personal ambition but by the need to offer Nigerians a credible alternative. He stressed that his ultimate priority is rescuing the country from its current challenges.
“My decision to contest in 2027 does not stop anyone else. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate comes forward, I am prepared to step aside,” Atiku stated.
He urged Nigerian youths to take a more active role in politics and assured that he would throw his full support behind any young candidate chosen to represent the ADC. Atiku also dismissed suggestions that he is desperate for power, insisting that his sole motivation is to help free Nigeria from those he described as holding it hostage.
