Following the passing of labor leader Domingo Michael Adeleke, both the labor movement and the Nigerian delegation to the 114th session of the International Labor Conference (ILC) in Geneva are in sorrow. After suffering from a brief illness, Adeleke, the chairman of the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), passed away in Geneva on Tuesday. He apparently fell ill while attending the conference in Switzerland as a member of Nigeria's delegation, and he was subsequently transported for medical care. He later died.
A spokesman from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who characterized Adeleke as a devoted trade unionist committed to the welfare of workers, verified the news. Adeleke, a member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), chaired the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council and participated in worker welfare and labor-related activism.
The NLC claims that throughout his tenure, he stayed dedicated to advancing social justice and good labor. According to the NLC, its leadership visited the hospital where his body is being held and started making plans for his remains to be sent home.
Nigeria's involvement in the ongoing International Labour Conference, which brings together governments, businesses, and workers' representatives from around the world to address labor and employment issues, has been clouded by his passing. Labor leaders and employees have continued to pay tribute to Adeleke for his contributions to labor relations and worker welfare.
The NLC described his passing as a major loss and sent its sympathies to his family, coworkers, and labor movement members. Colleagues recall Adeleke as a committed labor activist who spent a significant portion of his career serving the public and advancing the interests of workers.
