The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) has officially declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of all local government elections held yesterday across the state.
In a press conference at KWSIEC headquarters in Ilorin, Chairman Baba Okanla announced that the APC secured victory in all sixteen Local Government Area chairmanship positions and all one hundred and ninety-three councilorship seats.
The electoral process engaged five political parties—APC, APM, PDP, SDP, and Accord—across the state’s sixteen Local Government Areas and one hundred and ninety-three wards. Okanla commended the political parties for their commitment to maintaining a peaceful electoral environment, noting that the elections proceeded without major incidents.
He also praised security agencies for their effective management of the election, which ensured peace and order throughout the voting process.
Despite the overall peaceful conduct in most areas, the elections in Ilorin and Offa Local Government Area generated mixed reactions. While Ilorin experienced a smooth voting process, residents of Offa expressed dissatisfaction due to an insufficient supply of election materials, leading to the suspension of the election there. Voting in Ilorin commenced at 10 AM instead of the scheduled 8 AM, but the polling stations, including those for Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq and the APC chairmanship candidate for Ilorin South, operated without major issues.
A former council chairman voiced concerns over the KWSIEC’s preparedness, questioning how officials could resume voting in the afternoon with inadequate supplies. The PDP candidate in Offa called for the postponement of the election to avoid disenfranchising voters.
As of the time of reporting, the election in Offa has been officially suspended by community members protesting the lack of election materials.
