In what appeared to be a dramatic development that could potentially reshape the international football at the global stage, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has hinted that it may back Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. This was contained on the official website of the Nigeria’s football body while congratulating Government and people of the Kingdom of Morocco over Wednesday’s decision by FIFA that the North African country will co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup finals with Spain and Portugal.
The NFF chairman said his office all through its weight behind the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to facilitate the bid to stage the finals of the 2034 just four years after Morocco must have enjoyed the gesture.
The statement reads, “We believe the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has the infrastructure and facilities to stage a spectacular FIFA World Cup in 2034.”
The Saudi Kingdom has indicated interest in hosting the 20234 FIFA world cup and has since been lobbying in recent months as the county is currently investing heavily in the infrastructure that may push it to the level of being considered, after its regional member Qatar enjoyed similar gesture from FIFA in year 2022.
NFF’s potential support for Saudi Arabia’s bid could wedge a significant influence, considering Nigeria’s role in African football. Nigeria has a rich footballing history on the African continent, and the NFF plays a crucial role in the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The 2034 World Cup hosting rights are expected to be flagged off shortly by FIFA in the coming years, with Saudi Arabia facing other competitors in joint bids by other rival countries. The bid process is known for its competitive nature, as nations vying for the honor of hosting the tournament present their proposals to FIFA’s governing body which the kingdom has since commenced gathering support.
