The Akwa Ibom State Government has approved the construction of a new 10,000 capacity stadium in Eket town.
According to the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Monday Uko, the new stadium would be completed by May 2018.
The commissioner disclosed this on Wednesday, while inspecting the old Eket Stadium.
“We are going to construct a stadium that will take at least 10,000 spectators and going by the enthusiasm and quality that the governor attaches to projects, the stadium should attract international matches.
“Everything here will give way for a brand new stadium which by the grace of God will be completed before the end of May 2018," the commissioner assured.
The planned construction of the new Eket stadium comes barely 3 years after the completion of the magnificent 30,000 capacity Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The Uyo stadium and Games Village was finished in a record breaking two years by Nigerian standards in November 2014 after construction began in 2012.
The planned Eket stadium is set to follow the trend with a less than one year deadline set for its completion in May 2018.
