Following corruption scandals overtaking the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is expected to take over operations of CAF.
CAF Executive Committee members unanimously decided to concede control of the African football governing body to FIFA’s General Secterary, Fatma Samoura as “FIFA High Commissioner for Africa”.
This was following CAF President Ahmad Ahmad’s arrest last week by French police over corruption allegations and sexual misconduct.
According to Premium Times, Samoura will lead a FIFA team to thoroughly review the governance if CAF and oversee operations of the organisation as well as propose areas that need overhaul or reform.
“This will be done in order to put CAF itself on a modern and sound footing, improve its image and reputation and thus ensure that CAF is better equipped to face future challenges and to grasp future opportunities,” the document read.
FIFA is also expected to carry out a financial audit on the federation. Meanwhile, Ahmad is expected to hold a press conference today.
