Liverpool FC ended their pursuit of Southampton and Dutch international centre-back Virgil van Dijk. Controversy had trail the transfer move with the Saints saying they would report Liverpool to the Premier league over alleged illegal tapping of the player.
The Dutch international has attracted interest from many teams but had stated his preference for a move to Anfield.
Liverpool FC have apologised to the Saints over “any misunderstanding” and ended their interest in the defender.
It’s emerged that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had been sending text messages to the Dutchman which has infuriated Southampton bosses and resulted in their complaint to the FA. Now the situation has been turned on its head with Liverpool issuing an official apology which stated that; “We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk. We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”
Liverpool have previous too; back in 2012 a similar situation occurred with the then Fulham player Clint Dempsey when the club reported a deal had been done on its website only for an apology to be issued days later.
