Nigeria's men's and women's flag football teams are celebrating a landmark achievement after clinching both titles at the inaugural African Flag Football Championships held in Cairo, Egypt. The competition took place over two days, from Friday, June 20, to Saturday, June 21. The men's team claimed a nail-biting 13-12 victory over hosts Egypt in the final, overcoming the pressure of a lively home crowd at the Club One Stadium in Maadi. The atmosphere was electric, with dignitaries including Egypt's Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Ashraf Sobhi, in attendance.
In the women's final, Nigeria delivered a commanding performance to defeat Morocco 26-12, thanks to two crucial second-half touchdowns by quarterback Anuoluwapo Bello.
The double victory also guarantees Nigeria automatic qualification for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.
"This is a great achievement for us and I'm proud of every woman out here," Nigeria women's gold medallist Bello said.
"I feel excited for the girls here. There is an opportunity to go to the World Championships and show everyone what we can do."
