Following recent racist abuses against some professional footballers, Premier League stars have today led footballers in England and Wales in a 24-hour social media boycott in order to curb online racist abuses.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the campaign tagged 'MAKE A STAND AGAINST RACISM' with hashtag #Enough on twitter and other social media platforms is coordinated by England's Professional Footballers Association (PFA).
Watford FC striker, Troy Deeney inspired other footballers after he blocked abusive replies on his Instagram earlier this month, saying ''Enough is enough''. Football players were encouraged to take to social media and post #Enough graphic to promote the anti-racist abuse campaign.
The PFA stated that embarking on the boycott was necessary, as incidents of racist abuses both on stands and online have increased.
The association noted that the campaign is the first step to tackling racism in football, adding that the boycott shows unity amongst football players and a call for football authorities, media houses as well as social media companies to take actions regarding the abuses.
Players who have been abused include Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Troy Deeney, Danny Rose, Mohammed Salah( Islamophobic abuse), Raheem Sterling, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Moise Kean, Duane Holmes, Nathan Byrne, Adrian Mariappa, and Christian Kabasele.
