Despite antagonism by the Donald Trump new administration for signing executive order sanctioning its staff, the International Criminal Court, ICC, has reiterated its commitment to continue its judicial work. The ICC, in a statement this afternoon disclosed that it “stands firmly” by its personnel.
In a statement the global court said: “The ICC condemns the issuance by the US of an executive order seeking to impose sanctions on its officials and harm its independent and impartial judicial work.
The statement partly reads; “The Court stands firmly by its personnel and pledges to continue providing justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities across the world, in all situations before it,” it added.
Recall that the Trump government has accused the ICC of “illegitimate and baseless actions”, after the court issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza, which Israel denies.
Trump’s order also authorized economic sanctions against the ICC.
According to the order grants, Trump has broad powers to freeze assets and issue travel bans against ICC staff and their family members.
This is coming in response to the court’s decision during November last year 2024 where it issue arrest warrants against Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant.
Both men were accused of being genocidal and alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
