On Monday, President Bola Tinubu allegedly dispatched a high-level delegation to meet with authorities from the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Justice to address the case of beleaguered Nigerian former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu. Ayekooto Akindele, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who posted a video of their arrival in the UK on his Facebook page, said the delegation included Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.
Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, Nigeria's Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, welcomed the delegation to the Nigerian High Commission in London.
Ekweremadu has been arrested in Britain since March 2023 on the accusation of organ harvesting.
The former Senate President and his wife, Beatrice, were arrested by the London Metropolitan Police and charged with allegedly trafficking David Nwanini with the intention of harvesting his kidney.
In May 2023, a Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in London condemned the former Nigerian Deputy Senate President to nine years and eight months in jail for his role in an organ-trafficking conspiracy.
Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and a "middleman" doctor, Obinna Obeta, were convicted of conspiring to organize the passage of a 21-year-old man from Lagos to the United Kingdom to exploit him for a kidney transplant for their daughter, Sonia.
The arrangement failed. Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, Beatrice four years and six months, and Dr. Obeta ten years.
Beatrice Ekweremadu was released from prison in January 2025 and returned to Nigeria, but her husband is still imprisoned.
