The Academic Staff Union of the Nigerian Universities, ASUU says the country is undergoing internal colonialism and therefore there is nothing to celebrate as Independence Day. The union made the statement today through its Ibadan chapter of ASUU. The academicians have been on industrial action since February 14, 2022, which has continued unabated even after intervention by respected traditional rulers and clergymen.
President Muhammadu Buhari launched the National Council on Climate Change in a ceremony held before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday in Abuja. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has declared a British citizen, James Nolan wanted for jumping bail in the Process and Industrial Development Limited, P&ID case. James Nolan is one of the Directors of the P&ID Company standing trial in a fraud-related case in Nigeria alongside Lurgi Consult and others, in a $9.6billion money laundry allegation. The presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed yesterday disclosed that Mr. Nolan broke his terms of bail condition granted by the court after an EFCC application.
As preparation for the 2023 general election is gradually gaining momentum, traditional and religious leaders have called on politicians to avoid making statements that will throw the country into chaos. In a similar manner, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has warned political parties that their candidate should play by rules, saying their campaigns must be issue-based rather than name-calling or religious politicking. The electoral umpire called on the media to demonstrate neutrality during the electioneering period.
The newly sworn-in Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola has sought a constitutional amendment to halt some cases from reaching Supreme Court. The CJN made this appeal yesterday when he appeared before the lawmakers for a screening exercise to confirm him as the substantive CJN, saying the volume of workload at the apex court was overwhelming. He disclosed that the number of Supreme Court justices has gradually reduced from the usual 21 numbers to now 13 members only.
Authorities of Lagdo dam situated close to the Nigeria/Cameroun border have warned of an imminent flood in frontline communities along the river bank as it releases excess water from the dam. It would be recalled that the heavy downpour witnessed in the last couple of days in Nigeria has displaced over 100,000 persons even as others lost their lives while over 500,000 others were indirectly affected by the flood in the preceding month.
