The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that 20 universities are to embark on strike over the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and ASUU.
This development was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, following the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026.
The statement reads, “NEC discussed the state of the struggle and noted that a significant milestone had been reached signing the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, but frowned at the haphazard implementation and lackadaisical attitude of the Federal Government in the release of subvention to fully actualise the implementation of the said 2025 Agreement.
“Consequently, NEC resolved that permission be granted to the following branches that have approached NEC for an action to institute the procedures to embark on strike in order to press home their demands. This is to be preceded by the issuance of a 14-day ultimatum.”
The institutions listed for strike action include Abia State University; Niger Delta University, Bayelsa State; University of Africa, Toru-Orua, Bayelsa State; Bayelsa Medical University; University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa, Cross River State; Ambrose Alli University, Edo State; Gombe State University; Imo State University; Kaduna State University; Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Kano State; and Northwest University, Kano State.
Others are Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nasarawa State; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Nasarawa State; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State; Plateau State University; Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State; Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo State; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Ondo State; Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo State and Taraba State University.
