The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) announced a significant victory in its ongoing fight against terrorism, reporting the successful elimination of five key terrorist commanders and over 35 foot soldiers. The air strikes were conducted in Arina, Southern Tumbuns, Borno State, as part of Operation Hadin Kai.
According to a statement released by the NAF's Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the operation on August 16, 2024, targeted a known stronghold of terrorist activity in the region. The commanders killed in the strikes have been identified as Munzir Arika, Sani Dilla (also known as Dan Hausawan Jubillaram), Ameer Modu, Dan Fulani Fari Fari, and Bakoura Arina Chiki.
Gabkwet detailed that the operation was preceded by intelligence reports indicating a covert movement of terrorists into the area from neighboring locations. Follow-up Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions conducted on August 12 and 15 confirmed the presence of numerous terrorists and their infrastructure, hidden under dense tree cover.
The coordinated air strikes successfully engaged the targets, resulting in the destruction of several key structures, including equipment, vehicles, water vessels, and a suspected medical dispensary used by the terrorists. A subsequent Battle Damage Assessment revealed the extent of the destruction and confirmed that the operation had severely impacted the terrorists' operational capacity.
"This decisive action has significantly weakened the remaining terrorists in the region," Gabkwet said. "The Nigerian Air Force remains dedicated to supporting the efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies to restore peace and security to the Northeast."
The NAF's operation is part of a broader campaign to diminish the capabilities of insurgents and protect civilian populations in the region. The ongoing efforts are aimed at disrupting the activities of terrorist groups and ensuring the safety and stability of affected areas.
