President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi, on his recognition as a champion of press freedom by the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI). At the IPI's Annual Conference, which took place in Abuja on December 2, 2025, Ajayi was given a commendation award for his "unmistakable commitment to press freedom and respect for journalists and media organisations" since his appointment in late August 2024.
The IPI stated in a statement that the award was given not only to recognise Ajayi's credentials for press freedom but also to motivate him to further these endeavours and inspire other public servants and organisations to follow in his footsteps. As he accepted the accolade, President Tinubu praised the DSS Director-General for protecting press freedom, preserving citizens' rights, and carrying out his duties legally.
The President stated that by encouraging communication and active interaction with the general people, the DSS, led by Ajayi, is transforming the narrative of animosity towards the media and bolstering democratic accountability.
Noting that a free and responsible press is crucial to good government, Tinubu called on other security services and public authorities to take a similar stance by interacting with the media as partners rather than enemies.
In accordance with constitutional provisions permitting the media to hold public officials accountable, he added and urged the DSS to continue its efforts in establishing a conducive atmosphere for journalists and media practitioners to perform their professional roles.
