President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged all stakeholders ahead of the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship elections to maintain peace and sportsmanship. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu implored candidates, political parties, and their supporters to respect the democratic process and the will of the people. He expressed confidence in voters’ ability to make informed choices about their future leaders.
“Democracy thrives on civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of engagement,” the President emphasized. He acknowledged the commitment of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a free and fair election and called on all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring a successful and peaceful electoral process.
Tinubu commended the governorship candidates and political parties for their issue-focused campaigns, addressing key concerns such as improving livelihoods, promoting economic growth, and contributing to national development. He urged all citizens to conduct themselves respectfully during the voting process and to resolve any disagreements amicably through the appropriate channels.
The President also expressed unwavering confidence in the professionalism and integrity of both security agencies and INEC officials, urging them to remain impartial and avoid actions that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
In related developments, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa met with Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki to assure him of the Nigerian Army’s commitment, alongside other security agencies, to ensure a peaceful and credible election. Musa, accompanied by top military officials, visited the Governor at the Government House in Benin City.
During the meeting, Obaseki requested Musa to speak to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun regarding past police actions that had affected public trust, particularly following the #EndSARS protests.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi also emphasized the need for security agencies and INEC to adhere to electoral guidelines, assuring the people of Edo State that they would resist any attempts at rigging the election.
