The Super Eagles are now 14 places higher in the latest FIFA ranking after a stellar performance at the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. According to the latest ranking table, the Super Eagles garnered 1,522 points as against the 1,474 points they got in December 2023.
Nigeria (28th) who lost to Cote d’Ivoire (39th) in the final of the AFCON has however displaced Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria in the latest ranking to Africa’s top three, only behind Morocco (12th) and Senegal (17th).
According to FIFA, “Indeed, across the two continents, no fewer than six teams have scaled ten places or more. Amongst the African sides, Côte d’Ivoire (39th, up 10) reap the rewards of their continental triumph on home soil, secured following an eventful tournament campaign.
“Beaten finalists Nigeria (28th, up 14) make significant strides but are no match for the Angola side they ousted in the last eight (93rd, up 24), who are the biggest climbers in the latest installment of the global ranking.”
South Africa climbed 8 spots to 58th after claiming the AFCON bronze medal, Egypt dropped to 36th; Cameroon 51st, and Ghana, 67th after a poor outing at the AFCON.
Argentina is still ranked number one followed by France and England, who bag the top three spot on the ranking table.
