National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) staff staged a protest Friday morning in Abuja over alleged non-promotion of staff in the commision.

The staff have also insisted on a three-day warning strike to commence immediately.

The aggrieved staff who called for the removal of the Commissioner for Insurance, Alhaji Mohammed Kari, said they lacked necessary work tools while their allowances have not been paid.
The workers also lamented the delay in the review of the Insurance Act 2003 by the National Assembly which they said was frustrating policy implementations in the commission.

The workers displayed placards with inscriptions targeting the commissioner for insurance, such as “Monkey dey work, baboon dey chop” and “Mohammed Kari must go.”

Sokoto State Government said it had started the process of connecting a number of rural households with solar power to deepen energy usage and enhance rural electrification in the state.

Alhaji Bashir Gidado, the Special Adviser to Gov. Aminu Tambuwal on Public Private Partnership (PPP), made the disclosure at a news conference in Sokoto on Sunday.

The Kaduna State Wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday said it would shut down all public schools if the state sacks any of the 21,000 teachers that failed four examination.

The teachers’ union was reacting to the governor’s statement two weeks ago, in which he announced plans to sack 21,780 primary school teachers who allegedly failed a competency test and replace them with 25,000 new ones.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, said Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) lost over N500 million to activities of vandals in Abuja, Nasarawa, Kogi and Niger from January to date.

Idris made this known while inaugurating the Anti-Electricity Vandalism Response Squad (AEVRS) on Tuesday in Abuja.

The organised labour in Kogi has threatened to call out its members for mass action, should government continue to default in the payment of salary to its workers.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) issued the threat in a statement in Lokoja on Tuesday.

The death of a director in the Kogi Civil Service, who committed suicide, has drawn the attention of the House of Representatives to the non-utilisation of bailout funds and the non-payment of salaries in Kogi state.

The House of Representatives has mandated its Ad Hoc Committee on Bail-out Funds to investigate non-payment of salaries of Kogi workers and report back within one week.
