Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the department of ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, has been released by her abductors. She was abducted alongside her husband and nephew on December 27, 2023 at the senior staff quarters of the eye centre.

Although her husband was released in March by the abductors, however, Popoola and her nephew remained in captivity.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the spokesperson of Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Omoha Amobi stated that Popoola and her nephew had been set free.

The statement reads in part, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a role in ensuring her safe return.

“The unwavering support, prayers, and contributions of all members and well-wishers have been invaluable in this challenging time. Let us continue to support one another as we work towards a safer and more secure environment for all.”

It is however unknown if ransom was paid or she was rescued by security forces.
