The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) has ordered bank employees to declare their assets in line with the bank employee declaration of assets act. The act requires every bank employee within the first two weeks of taking the banking job to declare their assets. The EFCC has directed that the ordered must be complied with on or before 1st June 2021. The EFCC boss, Abdulrasheed Bawa, gave the order yesterday while speaking to newsmen after meeting with President Buhari.
He said the agency is set to clamp down on all financial-related crimes in the country and with the new law the anti-graft want the banks to be at the forefront of the fight against illegitimate fund acquired.
Bawa explained, “Let me just put this, we understood that at the tail end of every financial crime is for the criminal to have access to the funds that he or she has illegitimately gotten and we’re worried about the roles of financial institutions, And we have discussed, but we hope that all financial institutions, particularly the bankers, will declare their assets as provided for by the law, in accordance with the Bank Employees Declaration of Assets Act.
He reiterated that come 1st June 2021, the EFCC will commence demanding these forms from the banks through ensuring that the law has been fully in force. The EFCC boss revealed that the agency was able to apprehend about 300 cybercriminals across the country between February and March.
He warned that “As a young man, I am appealing to all young Nigerians to desist from these cybercrime activities. It is bringing a bad image to our country, it is giving a bad name to our country, and it is also chasing away a lot of foreign investment that we need,”
Bawa called on parents and guardians of these young men to prevail on their wards to desist from crime otherwise it would land in jail.
He explained “These are crimes that they commit online. And of course, there is nothing like patting your back to say go and sin no more. Our laws do not provide for that. It is a crime and as we say in EFCC, EFCC will get you anywhere, anytime.
