The chairman Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume has said that the Military will have no excuse to deliver on the war against terrorism and insurgency with the N895bn extra budget submitted by the executive to the National Assembly for consideration. In his ‘Democracy Day’ statement, Ndume said that the money would boost the fight against insurgency. According to Senator Ndume, the military no longer has excuses to succeed in the war against Bokoharam and other criminal elements.

There were pockets of protests across the country today June 12, which took place simultaneously in several cities including, Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Oyo. While Nigerians celebrated democracy day, others in some states took to the streets to protest among other things insecurity ravaging the country. In Abuja, it was reported that some Nigerian Youths who stormed the Gudu junction in the Federal Capital Territory, to protest clashed with some security operatives. Some of the protesters early hours of Saturday, blocked roads in the area to decry. Policemen reportedly fired teargas at the protesters to disperse them. The disruption forced the protesters, who carried placards bearing ‘Buhari must go”, “Say no to injustice”, “33.3 % Unemployment Rate is Criminal”, “Digital Right is Human Right”, scamper for safety. However, at the Millennium Park just opposite Unity Fountain, a few individuals wearing branded T-shirts with the inscription ‘I Stand With Buhari’, ‘Nigerians say no to fake activist’, ‘Nigerians say no to violence had assembled to show support for the president.

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism that Nigeria would surmount the current security and economic challenges bedeviling it. Mr. President in his speech on Saturday to mark the 2021 Democracy Day, promised that his administration is working hard to ensure that the senseless killings in many parts of the country will come to an end. According to President Buhari, the country in the last two years has witnessed and overcome a good number of testy challenges that would have destroyed other nations especially relating to its collective security. But the “the indefatigable CAN DO Spirit of the Nigerians” has sustained the nation and would continue to push these challenges away. He appreciated Nigerians for their support and patience despite the challenges, stressing that the country will come out of the challenges stronger. He said, “Overcoming the present challenges is but one of a necessary process that we have to undergo as a nation so that we can come out stronger.

The Nigerian Army has appointed Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu as its new spokesperson. Prior to his current appointment, Nwachukwu was the Acting Director of Defence Information. He was also the deputy director of Operation Lafiya Dole Theatre Command in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed has revealed today Friday 11th June 2021, the dismissal of the acting director-general of the National Broadcasting Commission Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, and to be replaced by Balarabe Ilelah as instructed by president Mohammadu Buhari.

The Federal Government has declared Monday 14 June 2021 as public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day, Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aragbesola said. In a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Shuaib Belgore titled “FG declares Monday, June 14, 2021, public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.” The minister urged Nigerians against inciting violence and any form of agitations during the period.
