The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) is set to unveil the country’s alphanumeric postcode system on October 1, 2026.

This was made known in a post on X from the official page of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, which reads, “On the October 1st, 2026, Nigeria’s new Alphanumeric Postcode System goes live.

“For the first time, every home will be assigned a unique postcode that’s simple, precise and built for a digital future. Will you be among the first to generate yours? Get ready.”

This alphanumeric postcode is a replacement of the outdated numeric-only system, and it is a more flexible alternative, especially as a result of the country’s quick urban development.

According to reports, the alphanumeric postcode has several benefits, such as improving delivery of goods, as well as improving census accuracy and distribution of social services, amongst other benefits.
