The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has stated that there is no new tax on vehicles, following a viral infographic alleging that a new vehicle tax has been imposed by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), effective July 1.

This was made known in a statement by Mr. Dare Adekambi, spokesperson of NRS and special adviser to the NRS chairman, Dr. Zach Adedeji.

The infographic disclosed that owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles are directed to pay an unspecified vehicle tax rate online or at approved banks and agencies.

Adekambi said the material was fake because it directed members of the public to visit http://www.firs.gov.ng for more information; he added that the official website of the NRS is http://www.nrs.gov.ng.

He said, “The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the service or any government agency.

“Citizens are, therefore, advised to disregard the fabricated messages designed to mislead the public and instead rely on official government channels for information on government policies.”

He urged Nigerians to follow the official pages of the NRS on all social media platforms and also visit its official website for correct information regarding tax.
