Academic Staff Union of Nigerian University, ASUU, Nsukka chapter has on Tuesday threatened to commence what they described as the “mother of All Strike” failure by the Federal Government to pay their withhold eight months' salary arrears that accumulated while they were on strike. UNN-ASUU chairman for Nsuka chapter, comrade Christian Opata, while addressing newsmen shortly before the union members embarked on a peaceful protest at the Nsukka main campus in Enugu state, hinted that the Institution will not hold any Senate or departmental Board meeting to approve student results.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the adoption of a new national language policy for primary schools, making the various mother tongues a compulsory medium of instruction from Primary 1 to 6. This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to State House correspondents immediately after the FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on Monday, warned Nigerians that if the Federal Government kept withholding their wages, a new crisis would break out in the country’s universities. The University of Ilorin, ASUU Chairman, Prof. Moyosore Ajao, raised the alarm at a special congress of the local branch held at the university’s main auditorium on Monday. The university lecturers had staged a solidarity rally within the University of Ilorin campus before returning to the auditorium, where they addressed journalists on ‘Casualisation of Intellectual Workers in Nigeria: Prelude to Our Response.’ The Secretary of the union, Dr. AbdulGaniyu Olatunji, while reading Ajao’s speech said Members of the public are hereby sensitized and put on notice again that a fresh crisis, which will surpass all previous ones is looming again in Nigerian universities as our members cannot and will not continue to do free work that will not be remunerated.

The Federal Government (FG) has formally announced the reintroduction of History in the country’s basic education curriculum, 13 years after its removal from the curriculums of primary and secondary school education in the 2009/2010 academic session. This was made known on Thursday at the flag-off ceremony of the subject’s reintroduction by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Nanah Opiah.

Former governor of Rivers State and the immediate past Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi bagged a law degree from Baze University on 19th November 2022. Amaechi who got the degree alongside 504 students who graduated from the school in various fields of study excelled with a second-class upper result. The graduands were awarded their various certificates at the ninth Graduation Ceremony, held in Abuja. Mr. Amaechi, in a statement issued by his Media Office on Saturday in Abuja, was admitted to the Bachelor of Law Degree Programme when serving as a minister. According to the statement, Mr. Amaechi, in spite of his tight schedules, combined the rigors of academic studies and his official work to achieve the grade.

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be preparing for another showdown as the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has insisted the government will not pay full salaries to lecturers despite their ongoing nationwide protest. The Minister stated this while briefing correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Adamu, insisted that the protesting lecturers would not be paid for work not done in line with ‘No work no pay’ policy. ASUU had on Monday begun protests across the country to press home their demand for full pay after the Federal Government failed to pay them for the eight-month period the lecturers were on strike.
