The National University Commission (NUC) has approved the upgrade of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto to be henceforth recognized as Sokoto State University of Education. The approval came as the 58th of its kind as a state University and 206th university in Nigeria. The Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Adamu Rasheed while presenting the recognition certificate to the Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in Abuja, said the Shehu Shagari University is now the first University of Education in Northern Nigeria also the 4th of its kind in the whole country.

The Federal Government has on Thursday disclosed that plans are underway to boost the salaries and the conditions of service of teachers across the country. The Minister of Education for State, Chukwuemeka Uwahiuba made the disclosure during the Seplat Energy Roundtable and STEP Certificate Award ceremony for teachers in Benin.

The Academic Staff Union of the Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has concluded a plan to extend its industrial action for another two months. Daily Trust reports that ASUU has concluded its plan during a meeting of last night at yet to be disclosed location that the academicians are determined that they will hold the government hostage until their demands are met. The statement said,” I can tell you that deliberations are still ongoing as far as our warning strike is concerned, but it is most likely that we extend the strike by 8 weeks,”

The Minister for Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige has briefed President Buhari of the development so far achieved on way forward on the negotiation of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government. The development came in handy when some group of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) took to the street in Awka, the Anambra state capital to register their displeasure over the treatment of ASUU by the Federal Government.
