The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian University (ASUU) has extended its ongoing industrial action/strike by another twelve weeks.
This was announced by the union at the end of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which was convened at Abuja yesterday, Sunday, 08th May 2022. Shortly after the meeting was commenced, ASUU hinted that the industrial action might likely be extended following the unserious nature of the approach by the federal government they alleged.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has explained that he has done what many cannot do to forestall Industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Ngige also dismissed insinuations that he is responsible for the ongoing strike by the union, stressing that his work was only to pacify and not to implement agreements reached. Speaking during a Silver Bird Television Live Interview Programme, the Minister said he has successfully conciliated 1683 industrial disputes since assumption of office in 2015, and has been taking extra measures beyond his statutory responsibilities, to forestall strike and ensure action is promptly suspended when workers union make it inevitable. The minister insisted that the role of the Minister of Labour is to resolve disputes and does not include the implementation of agreements reached with parties.

The National Examination Council (NECO) has postponed the 2022 National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for admissions into federal unity colleges, to allow for states with low registration to enrol their candidates. The exam was earlier slated for 23rd April 2022 and is now fixed for 7th May 2022. In a statement on Wednesday by the Head of Information and Public Relations Division, Azeez Sani, in Minna, Niger State, all candidates, parents, guardians and relevant stakeholders were enjoined to take note of the new date for the examination.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to immediately set up a high-powered panel comprising members with requisite mandates to resolve within 21 days the issues affecting industrial harmony in the nation’s tertiary institutions including Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). The union also said it would be convening a special meeting of the Central Working Committee of all affiliate unions of the NLC to decide on the next line of action. The NLC made the announcement in a statement by its President, Comrade Ayuba Wadda and General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, following a meeting with its affiliate unions in the education sector.

The Federal Government (FG) has approved the establishment of three new Federal Polytechnics in some parts of the country. This was made known on Tuesday in a statement issued by Mr. Ben Goong, the Director of Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education. The statement reads in part, “In line with his determination to make tertiary education more accessible, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of 3 new federal polytechnics in the country.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have released the mock results of the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which was conducted on Saturday, April 9, 2022. This announcement was contained in JAMB’s Weekly Bulletin released on Monday by the Office of the Registrar.
