The ongoing negotiation between the Academic Staff Union of the Nigerian Universities, ASUU, and the federal government seemed to have suffered a setback as the proposal for the pay rise has failed to capture the state universities. According to Mr. Ben Goong, the spokesperson to the Federal Ministry of Education, the federal government cannot dictate to the state government as state universities are owned by the state government and are on the concurrent list. A committee led by the Pro-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja, Prof Nii Briggs proposed a 180% pay raise for the lecturers while the federal government was insisting on 100%.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has revealed that the Federal Government has not paid its university lecturer's salaries since February it embarked on strike. This was disclosed through its president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke on 2nd August during an interview with Channels Television's Sunrise Daily. Consequently, Osodeke accused the government of using hunger as a bargaining tool to get striking members back to work hence salaries not being paid for the past six months. Noting that the force of hunger cannot take the lecturer back to the classroom.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed Saturday, August 6, 2022, for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) mop-up exercise for candidates unable to participate due to verifiable reasons during the period of the examination. This development was disclosed in the Board’s weekly bulletin, released on Monday by JAMB’s Head of Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has called on members and civil society groups in Lagos State to come out en-masse on Tuesday morning to begin a two-day protest on July 26 and 27 in solidarity with striking lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This is despite an appeal by the Federal Government to NLC to shelve the planned nationwide protest. In a circular signed by its Chairpersons and Secretaries of State Councils, the NLC said the decision was in line with the resolutions of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the body on June 30. Aviation workers, insurance and financial institution employees, and others have also promised to join the industrial action. Electricity workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), say they will join the NLC in its solidarity protest over the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike.

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has disclosed that the agency is set to establish menstrual banks across some schools in Northern Nigeria. The UNICEF Education Specialist, Mrs. Mairama Dikwa, made the disclosure in Bauchi state today that work will commence by this year November across all schools with Girls Enrolment Project 3 (GEP3). According to Dikwa, the project will focus on Menstrual Hygiene Management, a project that was established to support and ensure that Girls remain at school.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), as well as relevant stakeholders in the tertiary education sector, have fixed cut-off marks for 2022 admission into universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education nationwide. The decision was reached on Thursday at the Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which was chaired by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.
