The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it has deployed its personnel to rapidly contain the outbreak of Lassa fever in more than 18 states in Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement released in Abuja by Charity Warigon, communication officer for WHO in Nigeria.

The statement said: “For the Lassa fever response, 271 are involved in active case search, 235 in contact tracing and 320 in community sensitisation activities in the 18 states active states.”

According to Warigon, from January 1 to March 4, a total of 1,121 suspected cases of Lassa fever were reported across 18 states.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has advised Nigerians to be cautious of Particulate Matters caused by air pollution, saying it can result in cancer.

The Assistant General Manager, Central Forecast Office of NiMET, Olaniyan Olumide, made the disclosure during the National Workshop on Air Quality organised by the Centre for Atmospheric Research of the National Space Research and Development Agency.

The workshop was themed “Air Quality Research and Sustainable Development: The Nexus, Prospects and Challenges”.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Particulate matter, also known as particle pollution, is a complex mixture of extremely tiny particles and liquid droplets that get into the air.

The Non-teaching Staff of Nigerian Universities have suspended their strike. The staff, members of three unions, NASU, SSANU, and NAAT, announced the suspension of the three month and 10 days old strike on Wednesday. The national Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of three unions, Samson Ugwoke announced the suspension on Wednesday during a press briefing.

Three Australians have died after consuming cantaloupes amid a listeria outbreak that has made at least 11 other people across the country sick in the past seven weeks.

Listeria bacteria, although harmless to most people, pose a severe threat to the elderly, pregnant women and those with serious conditions such as diabetes and cancer.

Most of the cases have been in the state of New South Wales, with others in Queensland and Victoria.

Mr Adetodun Ajiboye, a clinical Psychologist, has stressed the need for continuous, proper sex education in homes, schools and places of worship to curtail the increasing rate of sexual abuse of children.

Ajiboye, who works with Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, made the call in a telephone interview with our correspondent.

According to him, child sexual abuse is a form of molestation where an adult or older adolescent uses a child for sexual stimulation.

Ajiboye said that sex education must not be relegated to the background or seen as a taboo but must be taught to children as early as possible, to prevent sexual abuse.
