Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood will remain behind bars on Sunday evening ahead of his appearance at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. The forward was arrested in January following allegations that emerged in images and videos posted on social media platforms. After being released on bail around February, Greenwood was arrested again on Saturday for allegedly breaching his bail by contacting the alleged victim and making threats. Confirming the decision to charge Greenwood on Saturday, Janet Potter, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The Crown Prosecution Service detailed that the three counts relate to the same complainant. It added that Greenwood would appear in court on Monday (October 17) with Greater Manchester Police confirming he had been arrested earlier today.
The 21-year-old has not played for Manchester United since January after he was bailed.
Meanwhile, Manchester United FC have released a statement about Greenwood, confirming he is still suspended after the 21-year-old was today (Saturday, October 15) charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The statement issued on Saturday read: “Manchester United notes that criminal charges have been brought against Mason Greenwood by the Crown Prosecution Service. He remains suspended by the club, pending the outcome of the judicial process.”
