The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has given Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential candidate, a 48-hour deadline to resign from the party over his involvement in a newly formed opposition alliance. In a statement on Thursday, LP spokesperson Obiora Ifoh reaffirmed the party’s rejection of the coalition, calling it a group of “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians.” “The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Gregory Obi, has been issued a 48-hour ultimatum to officially withdraw his membership from the party following his alignment with the new coalition,” the statement read.
Obi, who attended the launch of the coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja on Thursday, said joining the group was a carefully considered decision.
Ifoh also accused Obi of secretly meeting with LP members in an attempt to persuade them to join him in the new political movement.
“We are aware of several secret meetings Peter Obi has held with our members, trying to convince them to follow him into his new political alliance. Some have declined his offer,” Ifoh stated.
He emphasised that the Labour Party does not recognise the coalition and warned that any LP member involved must resign from the party within 48 hours.
“These are self-serving politicians, desperate to regain political relevance and cling to power,” Ifoh added.
He concluded by reaffirming the LP’s commitment to national renewal and called on members to remain faithful to the party and uphold its structure.
