Former Arsenal star, Paul Merson has predicted that Liverpool, despite their recent set back would emerge victorious in the English Premier League this season. Ahead of Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea FC, the Liverpool Club was the same that won the league last season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side is currently at third place on the table and their defenders, Joe Gomez, Virgil Van Dijk still battling with injury for a long.
As they are determined to defend their champion title, Merson opined that losing two of their strategic defenders would wake the attack-mind in their game strategy.
While talking to a column for the Daily Star, Merson said, “Losing Joe Gomez is just going to make Liverpool even more attack-minded and they’re still the team to beat in the title race,”
He added, “I think it is a big test for Jurgen Klopp to be without Gomez and Virgil van Dijk for any length of time. “But the way they set up against Manchester City was probably a sign of things to come.
“Playing like that gives you so many options and gets all of your attacking talents on the pitch at the same time.
According to the former star, the absence of the defender would trigger the fear factor in the team especially when Jota is added to the front three of Firmino, Mohammed Salah, and Sadio Mane.
He believed if Salah comes back quickly from his positive COVID-19 test, the formidable four could be frightening in the next few months. Merson added, “I still think they are the team to beat, even with all these injuries. If you finish above Liverpool and don’t win the league this season, you’re banging out of luck.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool would face Leicester City in the Premier League at Anfield next week Sunday after the International break.
