Twenty-year old German Alexander Zverev beat Roger Federer 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday in Montreal, Canada to take the Rogers Cup final. The 20-year-old Zverev won last week in Washington and has five titles this season, including in two ATP Masters 1000 events. He’s the youngest winner here since Novak Djokovic beat Federer in 2007 final.
Federer was in Montreal as part of his preparations for the U.S. Open, and he came here to get accustomed to the hard courts. He selects the tournaments he features in and at this point in his career, its all about the Grand Slams for the 36 years old Swiss player.
However, on Sunday, Zverev was quicker. He hit the ball harder, and he served better. He had six aces to Federer’s two. He put 69 per cent of his first serves in play, while Federer was at 51 per cent. The Swiss veteran finished the match with a back problem and physical discomfort.
Zverev said he noticed Federer lost some of the velocity on his serve at 2-2 in the second set and tried to take advantage of that.
“It is a positive week in the end,” said the second-seeded Federer. “The final was unexpected. But it’s keeping up with the good results of this year. Playing the final was a good thing. Of course, I’m disappointed with today. I thought I would do better. I wanted to fight a bit more and make the match a bit tighter. I had opportunities. But Zverev played extremely well. He played well all week.
