Roger Federer dispatches Tomas Berdych in straight sets to march into his 11th Wimbledon final. He overcome the big-hitting Czech 7 - 6, 7 -6, 6 - 4 on Friday during the second Men's single semi final match to set up a final with seventh seed Marin Cilic.
Marin Cilic, beat No. 24 seed Sam Querrey of the U.S. 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-5 in Friday's first semi-final. Federer played with a certain freedom after returning from a six-month injury layoff, he said he would have been happy simply making the second week.
He did that and much more, ending a four-year drought at majors and capturing an 18th grand slam title. Federer became the second oldest man to make the Wimbledon final after a 39-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1974; the Australian was one of those watching yet another of his Wimbledon semifinal wins.
Berdych erased a break point in his opening service game to start strong in his third Wimbledon semi-final. But Federer, who's playing in his 12th Wimbledon semi-final, came back at him at 2-2, smashing a jumping forehand before hitting a swinging volley for the break. He consolidated the break with a hold to love.
Federer used variety, including a steady diet of slice backhands, to keep the big-hitting Berdych off balance. The Swiss sought to stretch Berdych and not allow the 6'5” Czech time to setup on his lethal forehand.
Federer’s held his nerves as he stepped up to serve for a place in his 29th grand-slam final, seven more than Rafael Nadal, eight more than Djokovic and 28 more than Berdych.
