Spain's Garbine Muguruza on Saturday won her first Wimbledon title with a two straight-set win over the five-time champion, Venus Williams.Venus Williams who was bidding to win a major title for nine years to make her the oldest female Grand Slam Champion in the Open era was frustrated by Muguruza who demonstrated enormous determination, assisted by her youthfulness.
To clinch the title, "the 23-year-old saved two set points in the first set on her way to a 7-5 6-0 victory under the Centre Court roof."
Venus has since congratulated her on her title win. She said "Congratulations Garbine, amazing, I know how hard you work. Well done today, beautiful". When asked if she had a message for her sister, Serena, she said "I miss you. I tried my best to do the same things you do but I think there’ll be other opportunities, I do."
Responding, Maguruza said "I had I think the hardest match today against Venus. She is such an incredible player; I grew up watching her play. It is incredible to play her in the final. She was definitely an inspiration and it's incredible to play her here."
On losing to Serena Willaims two years ago, she said "Two years ago I lost in the final here to Serena. She said maybe one day I will win. So here I am."
Meanwhile, her statement that she grew up watching Venus play Tennis has been interpreted to mean tacit call for her retirement.
