The 48th Ordinary Session of the African Union's Executive Council is scheduled to take place in February 2026, bringing together key decision-makers from across the continent to discuss critical institutional, policy, and governance issues. The AU characterized the Executive Council as a key decision-making body within the Union in a notification posted on its website on Wednesday, which explained the importance of the meeting.
The Executive Council (ExC) of the African Union (AU) will convene its 48th Ordinary Session in February 2026. The statement partially stated, "The Executive Council is one of the African Union's principal policy organs, composed of Ministers of Foreign Affairs or other designated Ministers of AU Member States."
In addition to providing information on the meeting's time and location, the Union went on to outline the Council's mandate.
The AU further stated that the Executive Council would "consider the Report of the 51st Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC), deliberate on African Union participation in the G20, conduct elections and appointments to AU organs and institutions, review the implementation of its decision on the Skills Audit and Competency Assessment (SACA) process, and consider draft legal instruments and institutional governance matters."
Additionally, the African Union invited journalists to cover the events, especially the formal parts of the gathering.
"Journalists are invited to cover the official opening and closing ceremonies of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union on 11 and 12 February 2026," the statement stated.
The AU promised to offer further information before the event regarding media access and involvement.
"More information on media coverage opportunities and streaming arrangements will be shared in due time.
"For timely updates, including information on press conferences and interview opportunities, media practitioners are encouraged to follow the official African Union communication channels."
In accordance with the continent's long-term development vision under Agenda, the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council is anticipated to be crucial in determining institutional reforms and policy directions within the African Union.
