The driver of the car involved in the crash that left British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates has appeared before a magistrate's court in Ogun State, Nigeria. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, who was behind the wheel of the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua, was arraigned at the Sagamu Magistrates' Court on charges bordering on reckless and negligent driving, Prosecutors accused him of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver's licence.
The fatal accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Sinoma area of Sagamy. The vehicle reportedly rammed into a stationary truck while travelling from Lagos toward Ogun State.
Joshua, a former world heavyweight champion, sustained injuries and was hospitalised but discharged two days later. However, his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Kayode appeared in court on Wednesday, where proceedings were adjourned to March 17, 2026. The adjournment followed a request by the prosecution for additional time to prepare its case.
R.D. Kadiri, counsel representing the Ogun State Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), told the court that the case file had been forwarded by the police and that more time was needed to assemble witnesses and evidence.
Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun granted the request and ordered the matter adjourned. The court had earlier directed that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Ogun State Attorney-General for legal advice.
At a previous sitting on January 20, police counsel Richard Nigiwe had similarly sought an adjournment to allow prosecutors transmit the file to the DPP. Defence counsel Olalekan Abiodun opposed the move, arguing that three witnesses were already present and that trial should commence immediately.
The magistrate, however, ruled in favour of the prosecution, adjourning the case to enable legal advice to be obtained. The matter was subsequently rescheduled again this week at the prosecution’s request.
The crash dealt a devastating blow to Joshua’s camp, particularly with the loss of Ghami, described as a long-time confidant and conditioning coach, and Ayodele, who served as his personal trainer.
