In preparation for the Osun state governorship election scheduled to take place on Saturday, 15 August, 2026, the Nigeria Police Force has announced a statewide restriction of movement starting from midnight on 14 August, 2026.
This was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Iniedu Okokon, during a briefing at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo, Osun State.
He said, “We will be locking down the state. We will not be allowing any vehicular movement apart from those on essential duty, security duties and those going to cast their franchise.
“For this election, the IGP has directed that we post four unarmed personnel to each polling booth. Osun State has over 3,700 polling units, and so we’ll be having four law enforcement personnel at each of these units for the elections.
“We have commenced deployment for today again. I would like to give you some updates at this moment. As we speak, our air components have arrived. Our helicopter and drone units are on ground, and they have commenced surveillance patrols across the state.”
He also stated that a unit of Police Mobile Force (PMF) had been deployed to each local government of the state, adding that two units of PMF personnel had also been assigned to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state and seven detachments of personnel of Special Protection Unit (SPU) had also been deployed to escort sensitive election materials and also protect INEC officials during the course of the election.
Iniedu stated that the police remain neutral in the electoral process and further noted that the constitutional mandate of the police was to protect lives and properties.
