The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail of N100 million to a former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, regarding alleged access to a telephone conversation involving National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu.
The presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, also directed El-Rufai to report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS) by 10 am on every last Friday of the month to sign an attendance register pending the determination of his case.
Furthermore, he is to provide a surety that resides in Maitama or Asokoro area of Abuja and must deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property at the court registry.
Other requirements of the surety include a federal civil servant not below grade level 17, submission of an affidavit of means, entering into a bail bond, submitting a recent passport photograph to the court registry, and providing a verification letter from their department, as well as a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months.
El-Rufai is also expected to deposit all his valid international passports with the court registrar and submit a letter of attestation from the chairman of the Kaduna traditional council, amongst other requirements.
Justice Abdulmalik stated that any breach of the bail conditions would lead to automatic revocation of the bail.
Recall that in April, El-Rufai was arraigned on a five-count amended charge over the alleged unauthorised access to a telephone conversation involving the NSA.
The former governor had stated during a television interview that someone had wiretapped the phone of the NSA to allow him to listen to his conversation.
