On Thursday, 5th December 2019, Federal High Court sitting in Lagos convicted the former Governor of Abia State, Orji UzorKalu, who was charged with N7.1bn fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Mr Kalu and his co-defendants, UdehUdeogu, who was the Director of Finance and Accounts at the Abia State Government House during Kalu’s tenure as Governor have been on trial over misappropriation, and embezzlement of State's fund when he was Abia State Governor.
Justice Mohammed Idris while presiding over the matter found Kaluand his co-defendant guilty of the entire 39 counts charges filed against them by the EFCC. He then sentenced Kalu to 12 years’ imprisonment while he ordered the winding up of Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited, charged as the third defendant in the case.
