The United Nations (UN) has raised alarm over the flooding in Nigeria in 2022, expressing concern that food security could be worsened by the prevailing situation. Commenting on the disaster on Thursday during a news conference at UN headquarters in New York, Stephane Dujarric, UN spokesperson, said that “more than 19 million people across Nigeria are facing severe food insecurity.’’
“We are gravely concerned that the flooding will worsen the already alarming food insecurity and malnutrition situation in Nigeria,” Dujarric said. According to Dujarric, over 440,000 hectares of farmland have been partially or totally damaged at a time when more than 19 million people across Nigeria are facing severe food insecurity.”

The United States has promised to give out $1 million for humanitarian aid to flood victims to support the unprecedented flooding ravaging Nigeria. This support is coming from the U.S Agency for International Development, which will provide emergency shelter assistance, relief commodities, and hygiene kits to promote safe and healthy practices amid the ongoing cholera outbreak, and multipurpose cash assistance for people impacted by the devastating flood. The U.S consulate in Nigeria revealed this in a statement on 20th October 2022, She said “We are filled with grief for the flood victims who have lost so much – livelihoods, homes, and even loved ones.

Some activists as well as celebrities have converged at the Lekki tollgate, Lagos state, and other parts of the country today (Thursday), to hold rallies to commemorate the second anniversary of the #EndSARS protests.The memorial disclosed in a flier shared by entertainer, Folarin Falana, aka Falz the Bahd guy, on his Instagram page, will see participants walk and drive through the tollgate where the Nigerian army allegedly opened fire on armless protesters who were demanding an end to police brutality. Part of the flier read: “#EndSARS Memorial 2.0 procession. In memory of those who were killed on October 20, 2022 and those we have lost to police brutality, we will walk and drive through the toll gate, blast horns, sing and chant in unison through the toll gate, while we wave our flags.”

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, has kicked off “Exercises Still Waters, Golden Dawn and Enduring Peace” to tackle security challenges in the country especially during the Yuletide season. The director of Army Public Relations Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, revealed that the exercises targeted at mitigating the current security challenges in the South-South, South East, South West and North Central are to run concurrently across Nigeria.

A private company, Naebi Dynamic Services Limited, is to monitor the records of helicopter movements in and out of Nigeria and assist the country to boost Internally Generated Revenue from the sector. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, the Managing Director, Naebi Dynamic Services, Stanley Chike, said the firm was investing in equipment to monitor activities in the aviation and oil sectors across the country. According to him, the firm is investing in a multinational control room centre, radar equipment and navigational facilities to monitor the activities in the two sectors and beyond. With this investment, Chike said the movement of low-level flying equipment like helicopters would be appropriately captured by the country, while the IGR for the government would also increase.

Armed hoodlums have reportedly attacked Abdulsalam Abubakar General Hospital, in the process killing two persons in Gulu, Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, it was also revealed that the gunmen abducted over ten persons including a medical doctor and a pharmacist.
The incident was said to have occurred in the early hours of 18th October 2022, one of those killed in the act is retired medical personnel known as Ya-Tachi who lived opposite the hospital. According to eyewitnesses, it was said that the gunmen stormed in their numbers while shooting sporadically without confrontation from either security operatives or vigilantes while carrying out their operation.
