There is substantial anxiety in the Niger Delta region over the decision of the Federal Government to shut the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP). PAP was introduced in 2009 as part of the conditions agreed upon between the Federal Government and ex-militants who laid down their arms to embrace the amnesty offered by the late President Umaru Musa YarAdua. In reaction to the above development a group, Niger Delta Volunteers for Good Governance (NDVFGG) has condemned the planned winding up of the PAP by the federal government, saying it’s untimely hence the government should rather re-strategise with a view to accomplishing the spirit of the initiators of the programme considering the achievements reached so far.

An early morning fire outbreak has been reported on Wednesday at the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Yaba, National Office, Lagos. According to reports, several people are still trapped in the building as the fire rages.

The United States and Britain on Sunday warned of a possible terrorist attack in Nigeria's federal capital Abuja, especially aimed at government buildings, places of worship and schools, among other targets. Nigeria is fighting an Islamist insurgency mainly in the northeast, but in July the Islamic State claimed responsibility for a raid on a prison in Abuja, which freed around 440 inmates, raising fears that insurgents were venturing from their enclaves.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reached out to Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, pledging the full support of the Federal administration in assisting him and the people of Benue with resources to investigate the latest herder-farmer killings. The President, in a statement issued Saturday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, said it was “unacceptable for lives to be taken by herdsmen and farmers alike.”

The United Nations (UN) has raised alarm over the flooding in Nigeria in 2022, expressing concern that food security could be worsened by the prevailing situation. Commenting on the disaster on Thursday during a news conference at UN headquarters in New York, Stephane Dujarric, UN spokesperson, said that “more than 19 million people across Nigeria are facing severe food insecurity.’’
“We are gravely concerned that the flooding will worsen the already alarming food insecurity and malnutrition situation in Nigeria,” Dujarric said. According to Dujarric, over 440,000 hectares of farmland have been partially or totally damaged at a time when more than 19 million people across Nigeria are facing severe food insecurity.”

The United States has promised to give out $1 million for humanitarian aid to flood victims to support the unprecedented flooding ravaging Nigeria. This support is coming from the U.S Agency for International Development, which will provide emergency shelter assistance, relief commodities, and hygiene kits to promote safe and healthy practices amid the ongoing cholera outbreak, and multipurpose cash assistance for people impacted by the devastating flood. The U.S consulate in Nigeria revealed this in a statement on 20th October 2022, She said “We are filled with grief for the flood victims who have lost so much – livelihoods, homes, and even loved ones.
