Nigerian community leaders, local government areas in states including Anambra, Delta, Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa states, have been warned of impending floods in the coming weeks by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, on Sunday during a media briefing in Abuja. The minister, while enumerating the government’s efforts in mitigating the disaster in the country which she described as overwhelming, urged state governments to begin evacuation of persons living along water channels and other areas obstructing the flow of water. According to her, despite concerted efforts to avert the consequences of the 2022 flooding season as forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, many state governments did not prepare for the floods. So far, at least 603 people have been killed and 1.3 million persons displaced by floods from their communities, according to federal government, Experts are saying this is the worse flood disaster in Nigerian history.

Flight with registration number NAF 930 belonging to the Nigerian Air Force has become the first aircraft to land at the newly built Cargo Airport in Ado-Ekiti. The aircraft which landed at 10:20 am was flown by flight lieutenant Balogun, who conveyed the Federal Government delegates. The inaugural landing of the aircraft was witnessed by a jubilant crowd and dignitaries, including outgoing Governor Kayode Fayemi; Aviation Minister, Haidi Sirika; Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment, Niyi Adebayo; Ekiti Speaker Funminiyi Afuye, his deputy, Hakeem Jamiu and other top government officials.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was discharged, but not acquitted, according to the Federal Government. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) has said on Thursday the appellate court only decided a single issue that borders on rendition. Adding that Kanu has other pre-rendition cases to answer. Malami made the clarifications in a statement through his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar jibrilu Gwandu. The statement reads: “The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has received the news of the decision of the Court of Appeal concerning the trial of Nnamdi Kanu. For the avoidance of doubt and by the verdict of the Court, Kanu was only discharged and not acquitted.”

The Nigerian Navy on Tuesday received no fewer than 86 units of impounded drones from the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). Individuals and organisations without an end-user certificate imported the drones, leading to confiscation by the NCS. Speaking during presentation of the drones to the Navy at the FCT Command warehouse, the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), said the drones were intercepted at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and were subsequently forfeited to the government. He said the End User Certificate which is issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) was a requirement for purchase and import of the drones and other security items into the country. Bomoi, who represented the Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd), said the Service secured court forfeiture for the items before being handed over to the Nigerian Navy.

The Dangote Group has absolved self from the fire incident that gutted the House of Assembly yesterday morning. The company refuted claims that it was responsible for the development in a statement signed by Mr. Anthony Chiejina, Group Head Branding and Communications, Dangote Industries Ltd. on Monday in Lagos. Chiejina noted that the company, as a socially responsible corporate entity, totally refuted this allegation and condemned “the unprofessional and irresponsible attempt to smear its image before local and international investors and thus erode its brand value.” He said the company would never stoop so low as to sponsor thugs to destroy any property, belonging to either government or any individual. “Our attention has been drawn to a circulating press statement issued by the Kogi State Government, wherein the Dangote Group was accused of allegedly sponsoring arsonists to set the Kogi State House of Assembly on fire in the early hours of Monday, October 10, 2022,” the statement read.

Minister of Interior, Abdulrauf Aregbesola has hinted that his office will meet with state Governors to decide on the mass decongestion of prisons across the country by 30%. The minister stated this when he was a guest at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja. Aregbesola stated that the interface was a necessary one considering that more than 90% of Nigerian inmates were being kept in custody for offenses that contravene state laws. More so, he added this as more than 70% of the total inmates numbering about 75,635 inmates were awaiting trials according to his record.
