The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Territorial office has on Thursday received another batch of 161 stranded Nigerians from Mtiga in Libya. Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Acting Coordinator received the returnees at the Cargo wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

He disclosed that the returnees who were conveyed via Al Burqa Air, Boeing 737 aircraft, flight number UZ 189 and reg. number 5A-DMG, were sponsored by the European Union and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on the Assisted Voluntary Returnees (AVR) programme.


Among the returnees include 48 adult females, 4 female children, five female infants and 102 adult males, one male child and one male infant.


According to Farinloye, this batch has brought a total of returnees to over 14,000.


“This batch brought the total number of voluntary returnees from Libya to 14,045, which is made up of 8,200 males and 5,845 females,” he said.


Vigil360 reports that most of the returnees travelled to Libya in search of greener pastures but find themselves in uncomfortable situations like human trafficking, prostitution among others.
