The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has denied a plea by the self-acclaimed leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) seeking his relocation from the Sokoto Correctional Center to Kuje in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) or Keffi in Nasarawa State.
Acting through the Legal Aid Council, Kanu submitted an ex parte application seeking the court’s approval of his request without requiring a response from the Federal Government. He asked for an order mandating the Federal Government and/or the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to effect the transfer within the jurisdiction of the honorable court.
The IPOB leader also sought, as an alternative relief, an order relocating him to the court’s “immediate environs, such as the Suleja or the Keffi Custodial Centre, for the purpose of enabling the applicant to effectively prosecute his constitutionally guaranteed right of appeal,” the application read.
Justice James Omotosho, on Monday, refused the ex parte application, noting that justice required all sides to be heard.
He ordered Kanu to convert the application into a motion on notice and duly serve every party involved.
The judge thereafter set January 27, 2026, for the hearing of the motion on notice.
