The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has unveiled a gas-to-power monitoring committee in its bid to address persistent gas supply challenges affecting power generation.
Speaking during its inauguration in Abuja, the minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu, described the development as a “decisive and strategic step” to fix a critical problem in the Nigerian electricity supply industry (NESI).
He stated that the inauguration of the committee is “a declaration of intent and a clear signal that this administration will no longer accept the status quo where gas supply disruptions, pipeline vandalism, mounting debts to gas producers, and weak sector coordination continue to undermine our generation capacity and deprive Nigerians of reliable electricity."
The minister noted that the committee is mandated to monitor and implement the resolution of critical issues such as the repair and maintenance of damaged gas pipelines, the settlement of outstanding supplier debts, amongst other issues.
He expressed confidence in the committee, adding that members were selected from key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Power, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Association of Generation Companies, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), the Nigerian Gas Association etc.
