A two-day training workshop centered on strategic communication and monitoring misinformation, organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its staff in the Voter Education and Publicity Department, has ended.
According to the statement in a post on the Commission's X handle on Friday, ” The training, which was held in Keffi, Nasarawa State, between January 21 and 22, 2026, which was organised in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) as part of preparations ahead of future electoral activities,” it reads.
“Day Two of the training focused on practical and scenario-based learning designed to strengthen the capacity of INEC officers to respond effectively to emerging communication challenges.
The program guided the attendees through hands-on electoral scenarios, highlighting strategies for crisis communication, rapid intervention, and inter-institutional coordination in tense electoral periods.
Interactive sessions were coordinated by Judith Toryem, Project Manager at IFES Nigeria, along with the IFES Kenya Country Director and Nigeria’s Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, Mr. Obaje Ukeh, focusing on how electoral management bodies can respond to crises, address misinformation, and manage public trust during elections.
Day two focused on developing communication templates, crafting holding statements during crises, and engaging in scenario-based group exercises to address viral electoral misinformation. Participants also discussed strategies for institutional communications and effective media monitoring.
The programme provided an interactive platform for exchanging experiences, learning from peers, and engaging in practical exercises to boost INEC communication officers’ preparedness in countering misinformation and stakeholder communication.
It concluded with a debriefing and a reflection on the two-day lessons, while participants expressed gratitude to IFES and reaffirmed their commitment to applying the training insights in their work.
