The immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has been summoned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning. The agency’s invitation was contained in a letter dated November 24. It is fixed for Friday, November 28, for the interview. “The Commission is investigating a case in which the need to obtain certain information from you becomes imperative,” the letter, signed by Sunday Atiba Ofen-Imu, on behalf of the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, read.
Friday’s meeting will be held at the EFCC Headquarters Institution and Research District, Jabi in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
“In view of the above, you are requested to kindly attend an interview with the undersigned through the Head, Special Duty Committee-3.“This request is made pursuant to Section 38(1) and (2) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2024.“Your cooperation in this regard is highly solicited, please,” the statement concluded.
Malami confirmed the development in a statement posted on Thursday on his social media page. He said he remains committed to cooperating with investigators and upholding principles of transparency in public service.
His words: “This is to confirm that I have been invited by the EFCC. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation.”
He said accountability is a core value he has always advocated.“I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service, the principles that I both advocate and champion.“Rooted in public service and in the spirit of transparency and accountability, I am committed to sharing with the Nigerian public the developments as they unfold,” he added.
Malami served as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
