The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) released a statement on Monday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, indicating plans to implement the Tinted Glass Permit Policy nationwide, effective January 2, 2026.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, the move is attributed to the increased security threats and the misuse of vehicles with unauthorized tinted windows to carry out criminal operations.
The Police further explained that the decision was made after a thorough assessment of developing security issues nationwide, adding that the policy will be enforced until the court’s final verdict on a related case currently before the court.
“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public of the planned resumption of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court,” the Police said.
“At no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding the use of tinted glass on vehicles,” the statement reads.
The Statement noted that it previously halted enforcement of the policy to give motorists sufficient time to update their documents and finalize the permit registration process, representing the Force’s dedication to transparency, equity, and public interest.
However, the police noted that recent intelligence findings and security evaluations have shown an alarming surge in criminal activities carried out with vehicles equipped with illegally tinted windows.
“Some individuals and organized criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes,” it noted.
He noted that the installation of tinted glass on vehicles in Nigeria is governed by established traffic and security regulations, which mandate that motorists obtain official approval, particularly for medical or security purposes, before using such glass.
He added that the policy is designed to strengthen policing efforts by increasing visibility into vehicles, making it easier to identify occupants, and improving the efficiency of stop-and-search operations, especially in the fight against crime.
The Force stated that the reinstated enforcement would be implemented strictly in accordance with the Inspector-General of Police’s directive, with assurances that officers across the country would act professionally.
“The Inspector-General of Police assures the public that the renewed enforcement will be carried out with utmost professionalism, respect for the rights of citizens, and in accordance with extant laws,” it added.
Meanwhile, motorists who need tinted glass permits have been urged to submit their applications through authorized platforms and ensure they fully meet all legal requirements before the January 2, 2026, enforcement date, as the Police gear up for a nationwide crackdown on violations.
