An Abuja train en route to Kaduna derailed on Monday after colliding with another train along the rail corridor, resulting in the immediate stoppage of operations and the confirmed injuries of several passengers. Serious questions about safety procedures and the signaling system on Nigeria's biggest rail route have been raised by the event, which happened during the busiest early morning traffic. Passengers claim that although the train left Kaduna on time, it ran into a stalled or approaching train on the track. Both engines completely stopped as a result of the impact, which witnesses characterized as a "sudden and violent jolt."
One passenger recounted via social media, "We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang and the train suddenly braked. We later realized we had hit another train on the same track. Everyone is shaken, but we are waiting for official word.”
"Just dropped from the Kaduna-Abuja train," remarked Sada Malumfashi, another traveler. The train abruptly stopped, throwing passengers across, and we heard a huge crash. Most of the passengers who were struck are seriously hurt and bleeding.
An official casualty figure has not yet been made public by the NRC. According to preliminary accounts, there were no immediate reports of casualties even though the crash seriously damaged the train engines. To protect the area and evacuate passengers, emergency teams and security staff have been called in.
The Digital Signaling System, which is intended to keep two trains from occupying the same track block, has also come under serious scrutiny as a result of the collision. Passengers speculate that the incident might indicate a serious malfunction in the automated signaling system or a communication breakdown between train operators and the control center.
No one had perished while submitting the complaint, according to Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation; nonetheless, the injured passengers had been returned to the Idu train station for the required medical care.
According to Opeifa, the NRC is presently conducting an inquiry to determine the precise cause of the occurrence. “It is confirmed that our Abuja-Kaduna train had an incident at Asham. Passengers were injured while an investigation is ongoing into the exact cause of the incident.”
