Nigerian long jumper Ese Brume broke the Commonwealth Games record twice on Sunday to win Team Nigeria’s 12th gold medal at the ongoing event in Birmingham. Australia’s Bronwyn Thompson in 2006 set the record at 6.97m in Melbourne before Brume's fourth attempt on Sunday set the record at 6.99m.
En route to clinching Nigeria’s 12th and last gold at the Commonwealth Games, the 26-year-old again broke the Games record again a few minutes later with her last attempt, after a leap of 7.00m.
She fended off competition from Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl, Deborah Acquah from Ghana, and fellow compatriot, Ruth Usoro who finished in second, third and sixth positions respectively.
