The United Nations Children's Fund has concluded plans to organize a workshop on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) for secondary school girls in Osun, Kano and Enugu. UNICEF Coordinator of MHM, Femi Aluko stated this on Sunday in Oshogbo the Osun state capital while having a chat with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He disclosed that the essence of the workshop was to identify the challenges associated with MHM such as taboos and poor hygiene and proffer solution to them.
Aluko lamented that recent study conducted by UNICEF indicated that one out of three school girls in South Asia knew nothing about Menstruation prior to it while girls in Iran and India believe that it is a disease. He expressed optimism that the programme would address misconceptions and health challenges associated with the stage in girl's bodily change.
“Further, broadening our understanding of menstrual hygiene could also change what practitioners and researchers do and what they measure. The workshop will also be used in developing a zonal action plan that would address the challenges of managing menstruation among adolescent girls and women in the country,’’ he said.
